UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – NBC Universal's Universal Studios theme parks have removed the trans fats from many of the foods it serves at Universal Studios Florida in Orlando; Islands of Adventure, also in Orlando; and Universal Studios Hollywood in Los Angeles, according to published reports.
The company in October that it would offer healthier meals for children and remove trans-fatty acids, which are linked to elevated levels of "bad" cholesterol and heart disease.
Reportedly, over 90 percent of the foods served at the theme parks are now prepared with oils free from trans fats. Other items, such as a Hispanic fried-dough pastry called a churro, are expected to be trans-fat free by the end of 2007.
Earlier this month New York City became the first American city to ban artificial trans fats in restaurants. SeaWorld Orlando is also reportedly planning to cut fats and calories in some food offerings, and has opened an entire restaurant where meals are made without trans fats and preservatives.
