United to Extend Military Discount Due to Gov't Shutdown
United Supermarkets, LLC will extend its Military Discount Wednesdays program to seven-days-a-week until further notice as a result of the federal government’s shutdown and the subsequent closure of military base commissaries.
The program will offer a 10 percent discount on grocery purchases for all active, retired and civilian military at all eight United Supermarkets and Market Street locations in Abilene, Burkburnett and Wichita Falls. The discount is applicable to all grocery purchases – excluding fuel, gift cards or pharmacy purchases – with valid military ID.
“These communities have seen several hundred military families furloughed due to the shutdown of the federal government this week,” said Mark Yowell, regional VP for United. “Coupled with the resulting closure of the base commissaries, it has become difficult for these families to meet their grocery needs.”
Military Discount Wednesdays was originally scheduled to run through Veterans Day, but the discount will now be available daily until further notice.
“We created the program to demonstrate in a small way how appreciative we are of our guests who are serving in the military, and to thank them for their dedication and commitment to our great country,” Yowell said. “We are glad that we are able to help ease their burden in this unforeseen time of need.”
