Tesco Plans 'World's Greenest Store'

LONDON -- Tesco PLC, Britain's biggest supermarket chain, revealed plans this week to open what it has dubbed the "greenest store in the world."

The supermarket, which is planned for Aylsham in Norfolk, England, will be built entirely from recyclable materials, including wood, recycled plastics, and other green materials. It will also house modern environmental technology.

The retailer said it has set up a $178.5 million fund to be used for innovation in sustainable environmental technology. It will be installing wind turbines at some of its new stores, alongside solar energy technology, geothermal power, combined heat and power, and tri-generation. It will also be testing gasification, a revolutionary technology to turn waste into clean, sustainable power.

Tesco opened its first model energy efficient store in Diss in 2005. The store uses 20 percent less energy than comparable stores.
