Target to Unveil Latest Grocery Combo Prototype in Atlanta Suburb

MINNEAPOLIS -- Mass merchandiser Target Corp. here plans to unveil its latest version of SuperTarget in the Atlanta suburb of Acworth, Ga. in July, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reports. The 174,000-square-foot store will dedicate twice as much space for grocery and HBC, and will feature larger windows to let in more natural light.

A spokeswoman for Target was quoted by the newspaper as saying that the new SuperTarget concept will be the first of many.

Target launched SuperTarget in 1995 as a conventional Target/supermarket combination. Analysts have said that the company hasn't achieved its objectives with the format, however, and has run into tough competition from Wal-Mart Supercenters.

The Atlanta SuperTarget, at 3352 Cobb Parkway N.W., is just blocks north of a Wal-Mart Supercenter. It will anchor a 40-acre retail development by North American Properties called Lakeside Marketplace.

Target Corp. will show off the new store at its annual shareholders meeting, which will be held in Acworth May 17.
