Supervalu's New Fleet Runs on Natural Gas
Grocery distributor Supervalu plans to unveil the East Coast's largest natural-gas-powered truck fleet during a ribbon-cutting event at its Mechanicsville, Va., distribution center on Dec. 6.
The 35 class 8 Volvo trucks operate on compressed natural gas (CNG). Supervalu, based in Eden Prairie, Minn., said it plans to add another 20 trucks next year.
The company will also debut its new fast-fill CNG station, built by TrilliumCNG to power the trucks, during the ceremony.
Taken together, this effort will reduce the fleet's annual oil consumption by more than 1 million gallons and result in 1,300 fewer tons of greenhouse gas emissions, according to Supervalu.
Virginia secretary of commerce and trade Jim Cheng, along with company officials, will speak at a news conference during the event.
