Supervalu Opens New Stores in Key Regional Markets, Gives Some Existing Stores a Makeover

MINNEAPOLIS -- Wholesaler/retailer Supervalu Inc. said yesterday it is planning to be very busy on the retail side of its corporate identity this year, adding locations to its retail grocery network with new store openings in key markets, and also engaging in a dynamic remodeling program across all corporate-owned store banners.

"In fiscal year 2005, we continued to build successfully on our plan for expansion across our major markets, which consistently has been our strategy," said Supervalu e.v.p. and president for retail foods John Hooley. "In our new fiscal year 2006, we'll continue our tradition of fresh thinking with more new store openings and remodels across our banners. We remain committed to growing Supervalu retail business and supporting our expansion plans, ensuring that our regional banners continue to hold a strong share in their respective markets."

The company talked specifically about its portfolio of regional retail banners including price-oriented superstores branded bigg's, Cub Foods, Shop 'n Save, and Shoppers Food & Pharmacy; and traditional supermarkets under the Farm Fresh, Hornbacher's and Scott's banners.

Current expansion activity includes:

-- bigg's: A 76,000 square-foot store will open in May at a former Thriftway property in the Hyde Park area of Cincinnati, Ohio.

-- Cub Foods: The largest grocer in the Minneapolis/St. Paul market, the chain will open stores there this summer at two recently acquired new sites in the Minneapolis suburbs of Champlin and Chanhassen. The new stores will bring the Cub Foods' Twin Cities network to 52 stores, including franchises.

-- Shop 'n Save in Pittsburgh: The division plans to open a new store in New Stanton, Pa., this month. The 48,000-square-foot Shop 'n Save will be the anchor tenant in a renovated retail development, and extend Shop 'n Save's new Pittsburgh "icon" brand to East Liberty.

-- Shop 'n Save in St. Louis: The chain is continuing with an active remodeling program, that saw seven stores remodeled or enhanced in fiscal year 2005.

-- Shopper's Food and Pharmacy: A new, 57,000 square-foot store will open in Baltimore in April, anchoring a new shopping center. Another 69,000 square-foot Shopper's superstore will open in June in Dumfries, Va., adding to the Shopper's network across Baltimore and Washington, DC.

-- Farm Fresh: The chain recently opened its first store in North Carolina, a 63,000 square-foot unit. Farm Fresh also has completed a major remodel of its Williamsburg, VA, store, expanding the footprint to 70,000 square feet, making it the largest Farm Fresh location in the chain. The expanded format features aisles named after historical streets and checkout lanes named after U.S. presidents. Supervalu also has acquired two former Winn-Dixie locations for Farm Fresh's expansion into Yorktown, VA, and a second location in Williamsburg. The company plans major remodeling projects at those locations and expects to open the doors this summer.

-- Scott's Food & Pharmacy: Fort Wayne, Ind.'s oldest grocery chain, the 18-unit company recently initiated two remodeling projects.
