Stop & Shop Promotes '5-A-Day' and Healthy Eating With Store Tours for Schools
QUINCY, Mass. - Stop & Shop, an Ahold banner, hopes to teach kids a thing or two about healthy eating through store tours for children in grades K-3 during the 2004-2005 school year.
Tours through the produce, meat, seafood, dairy, and bakery departments are led by a knowledgeable Stop & Shop store associate and include discussions of the Food Pyramid and eating 5 A Day for better health.
"Healthy eating habits begin in childhood, and so it is important for parents, schools, and the community to help children learn to eat healthy," said Paulette Thompson, manager of health and wellness for Stop & Shop. "Surveys show that most children are not eating the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables a day."
In addition to offering the tours, Stop & Shop has put helpful action tips up on its Web site, www.stopandshop.com.
In other Stop & Shop news, American Express has announced that it is partnering with Stop & Shop locations throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic to help feed the hungry. From Oct. 31 through Nov. 27, every time an American Express Cardmember shops at Stop & Shop, American Express will donate 25 cents per transaction (for a total gift of up to $150,000) to the Stop & Shop Family Foundation Food for Friends program to help support numerous area food banks throughout the year.
