Stater Bros. Raises $254K to Fight Heart Disease

COLTON, Calif. -- Regional independent Stater Bros. showed that it has a big heart during a recent promotion it ran that raised $254,241 to benefit the American Heart Association, making its total donations to the association for the past five years more than $1.1 million.

"Stater Bros. is extremely proud of the outstanding success of this year's American Heart Association fund raising campaign," said Jack H. Brown, Stater Bros. chairman and c.e.o. "This campaign is an important tradition at our company and not only raises much needed funds but helps to raise awareness of the risk factors for heart disease and stroke."

During the month of February 2006, every checkstand in all 162 Stater Bros. supermarkets sold "Have A Heart, Save A Heart" red paper hearts for $1 and gold paper hearts for $5. All of the funds collected will go back to the local communities served by Stater Bros. and will be used for research and educational programs that prevent heart disease and stroke.

A check presentation took place on Thursday, April 27, at a Stater Bros. supermarket in Bloomington, California, which for the second straight year led the company in total fundraising dollars collected.

The $254,241 check was presented to stroke survivor Ian Carnochan and eight-year-old heart transplant survivor Hannah Grinnan.

The American Heart Association has helped protect people of all ages and ethnicities from the ravages of heart disease and stroke. These diseases, the nation's No. 1 and No. 3 killers, claim more than 930,000 American lives a year. The association invested more than $473 million in fiscal year 2004-05 for research, professional and public education, advocacy and community service programs so people across America can live stronger, longer lives.
