Stater Bros. CEO Recognized by Marine Corps. Scholarship Foundation
Jack H. Brown, chairman and c.e.o. of Stater Bros. Supermarkets and a Navy veteran, will receive the 2008 Semper Fidelis Award -- the highest honor bestowed by the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation -- during the Foundation's Annual Ball.
Other honored guests at the event will include ambassador George Argyros, who was the 2007 Semper Fidelis honoree; General James F. Amos, assistant commandant of the Marine Corps; and five Medal of Honor recipients.
Brown served in the U.S. Naval Reserves from 1956 to 1962. He was called to active duty in 1959, where he served in the Pacific Fleet, and was honorably discharged in June 1962.
Following his military service, Brown returned to the supermarket industry and quickly rose through the ranks. He joined Stater Bros. as president and c.e.o. in 1981, and has been at the helm of the company for the past 27 years.
Under Brown's leadership, Stater Bros. has established a long history of support for the men and women serving in the armed forces. The grocer is a major supporter of the Riverside National Cemetery Support Committee and was one of the lead sponsors for the cemetery's National Medal of Honor Memorial (dedicated in 1999) and the National POW/MIA Memorial (dedicated in 2005). It is also a major supporter of the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial VA Medical Center in Loma Linda, Calif.
During every U.S. military operation, Stater Bros. protects the jobs and benefits of the company's reservists when they are called to active duty by continuing to pay their weekly wages minus military pay as well as the medical, dental, and vision benefits for their families. More than 200 Stater Bros. employees have been called to active duty and many continue to serve today, said the company.
The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has awarded more than 21,000 scholarships and bonds totaling more than $34.6 million since its founding 50 years ago. In 2007, 1,044 scholarships were awarded, totaling $3.49 million.
Stater Bros. operates 165 Supermarkets, and employs more than 19,000 associates.
