Smithfield To Buy Cook's Ham Biz From ConAgra

SMITHFIELD, Vir. -- Meat processing company Smithfield Foods Inc. will acquire most of the assets of Cook's ham business from ConAgra Foods Inc.

With annual sales of about $330 million, Cook's, based in Lincoln, Neb., produces traditional and spiral sliced smoked bone-in hams, corned beef and other smoked meat items sold to supermarket chains and independent grocers throughout the United States and Canada. Manufacturing facilities are located in Lincoln, as well as Grayson, Ky., and Kansas City, Mo.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Smithfield expects to complete the deal during its fiscal fourth quarter, which ends April 30, 2006.
