ShopRite Operator Ups Efficiency With Mettler Toledo Wrappers
Since Glass Gardens ShopRite, a Rochelle Park, N.J.-based family-owned chain of 11 New Jersey and New York supermarkets belonging to the Wakefern Food Corp. retailer cooperative, installed Mettler Toledo 880 Auto Wrappers in four of its stores last year, it has weighed and wrapped more than 1.5 million packages (as of May).
In the area of efficiency, meat department staffers were not only impressed by the wrapper’s speed, but also by such advantages as its ergonomic benefits; noise reduction; fewer manpower needs; space savings; a tighter, more professional-looking wrap; and less time spent on film roll replacement, cleanup and repackaging.
“It’s a lot more efficient, and saves a lot of time,” observed Bill Scorzetti, meat department manager at the chain’s Pearl River, N.Y., store.
Department associates were also pleased by how easy the machine is to operate. On-screen tutorials instruct new users in the various processes, while a tactile keyboard, internal memory and visual display result in quicker, more reliable shifts when changing stock. Customizing labels and pinpointing their location on the packages is an additional plus.
Perhaps the most critical advantage associates noted, though, was the ease of troubleshooting when minor mishaps occur. Clear, easy-to-understand visual instructions have allowed operators to correct every situation themselves during the six months following installation.
