Shoppers Food & Pharmacy Names S.V.P. Operations

LANHAM, Md. -- Dick Bergman, president of Shoppers Food and Pharmacy here, said Friday that his company has appointed Rick Rodgers to the position of s.v.p. operations.

Reporting to Bergman, in his new role Rodgers will be responsible for the operational execution of all 64 Shoppers locations, including execution of merchandising, labor management, and expense control.

He most recently served as s.v.p. of merchandising and s.v.p. of alternative formats. In the latter position, he was a key figure in the development and opening of the first El Primero Mercado store, which debuted in December 2005.

Rodgers started off in the supermarket industry as a produce field merchandiser for Basic Foods Warehouse in 1986. In 1989 he joined Farm Fresh of Baltimore as director of produce procurement. Two years later Rodgers came to Basic/Metro Food Markets, which Shoppers acquired in 2000. At Basic/Metro Food Markets he served variously as store director, v.p. of grocery, and s.v.p. of marketing and procurement.

Noted Bergman in a statement: "With Rick's wide range of experience in the retail supermarket business, he will be a valuable asset to Shoppers in his new position."

Shoppers Food & Pharmacy operates 64 stores in the mid-Atlantic region. The banner is a regional chain of Supervalu, the second largest retail supermarket company in the United States.
