Sheetz Opens Second Convenience Restaurant

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Altoona, Pa.-based convenience store operator Sheetz, Inc. opened its second convenience restaurant -- a hybrid concept that combines quick-casual dining and convenience -- here yesterday.

The company opened its first convenience restaurant in its hometown in June 2004. The company developed the concept from customer feedback.

"The convenience restaurant is a revolution in both the food and convenience industries," said Steve Sheetz, chairman of the family-owned convenience store chain. "The concept combines a top-quality restaurant with a wide variety of great-tasting food and a state-of-the-art convenience store."

The 10,000-square-foot convenience restaurant offers a menu prepared in a food theater where customers can watch as employees in white chef's coats prepare their selections. Menu items include turkey and roast beef Carverz sandwiches, pizzas, hand-tossed salads, cold and toasted subs, panini sandwiches, quesadillas, and Black Angus Burgerz.

A full-service espresso bar features a touchscreen order point for Sheetz Bros. Coffeez, Sheetz's own line of gourmet coffee, and a barista prepares specialty mochas, lattes, cappuccinos and fruit smoothies.

The facility also features dine-in options with indoor and outdoor seating for more than 100 customers, a touchscreen drive-through, digital menu boards, touchless restrooms, and a gas island with 100 percent capability.

The convenience area includes more than 350 bottled drink choices, a beer cooler, cigarettes and tobacco products, and fresh baked goods, as well as additional fill-in grocery items such as milk and bread. There is also a grab-and-go case stocked with fresh food items.

The restaurant offers DVD rental and five large screen TVs, while the convenience section features self-serve bulk candy dispensary as well as kids' meals and Nickelodeon merchandise. The facility also has tot pots in both men's and women's family restroom facilities.

Sheetz, Inc. operates more than 300 convenience locations throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio, and North Carolina.
