Shaw's Makes Record-breaking Donation to Area Food Bank

WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Shaw's Supermarkets here has contributed 62,266 pounds of food, gathered during its sixth annual "Spirit of Giving" food drive, to the Greater Boston Food Bank. It is the largest donation ever received by that organization, which runs a New England-wide program that currently benefits eight food banks.

"This year we made it even easier for customers to participate in the food drive, by offering preassembled bags of nutrient-rich food ready for purchase, right in front of the registers," said Shaw's communications manager Rick Tremblay. "The fact that customers could make a significant difference in the lives of people in need for as little as $5 was a powerful incentive for our customers."

Spirit of Giving, which ran in all 212 Shaw's and Star Market stores in New England, amassed a total 197,110 pounds of food. The food gathered in each store was distributed to the food bank serving that geographic area.
