Shaw's Helps Family of Deceased State Trooper

WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Carl Jablonski, president of Shaw's here, has presented a check for almost $60,000 to the family of Paul F. Barry, a Massachusetts state trooper killed in a car accident in June, according to a published report.

"I'm very proud to present this check," Jablonski told Col. Mark F. Delaney, superintendent of the state police, who accepted the check on behalf of the Barry family. "We appreciate everything you guys do for us every day." The family of the fallen trooper didn't attend the ceremony.

Shaw's began raising funds for the Barry family last month at several local locations, including the family's regular store in Franklin, Mass., by placing a jar for donations at each of the store's registers.

The drive was so successful that the retailer decided to widen it, said Shaw's communications director Judy Chong. "It started on a weekend, and we did so well, we decided to bring it to all the Massachusetts stores and one in Woonsocket, [R.I.,]" said Chong.

Shoppers raised nearly $55,000 in a month, and Shaw's added $5,000.

Barry's fatal accident is still under police investigation.
