Shaner Takes Helm of Save-A-Lot; C.E.O., Founder Bill Moran Retires

ST. LOUIS -- Bill Shaner, e.v.p. and c.o.o. of Supervalu's Save-A-Lot subsidiary here has been named president and c.e.o., replacing the chain's founder, president, and c.e.o., Bill Moran, effective September 2006. Effective immediately and continuing until his retirement, Moran will assume the role of vice chairman, while Shaner will also become an s.v.p. at Supervalu effective immediately.

"Bill Moran has been the visionary force for Save-A-Lot and the industry," said Jeff Noddle, Supervalu's chairman and c.e.o. "He has guided Save-A-Lot's emergence as a national chain with more than 1,100 stores open from coast to coast. His unswerving focus and sound, ethical business practices have made Save-A-Lot a model of exceptional grocery retailing."

Throughout his nearly 50-year career, Moran has worked at almost every level in the grocery retail and distribution industry. He began his career unloading boxcars at Tomboy Wholesalers while still in college, and joined the company full-time upon graduation. He eventually progressed to v.p. of marketing.

While with Tomboy, Moran developed a means for single stores and small-chain operators to compete on pricing with larger chains: the limited-assortment format. He struck out on his own and opened the first Save-A-Lot in Cahokia, Ill. in 1977. Save-A-Lot became a wholly owned subsidiary of Minneapolis-based Supervalu in 1992.

A Supervalu veteran of over 20 years, Shaner joined the company in 1984 as a merchandiser and has since held a variety of positions of increasing responsibility, including president of Supervalu's former Maryland division, president and c.e.o. of the former Allentown, Pa.-based Laneco division, and president of Supervalu's Central region. He joined the Save-A-Lot organization in 1999 in his current capacity.

"Bill is an excellent choice to lead Save-A-Lot at this exciting time in its history," said Moran. "Save-A-Lot has a strong future and complements Supervalu's multiformat retail portfolio with its innovative merchandising programs including the integration of general merchandise, expansion of produce offerings, successful consumer awareness programs, and the banner's licensee remodeling program. I am confident that with his diverse experience and industry insight, Bill is a great leader for the next phase of Save-A-Lot."
