Save Mart, Law Enforcement Join Forces to Benefit Special Olympics
MODESTO, Calif -- Save Mart Supermarkets has teamed with local police and Special Olympics Northern California to support the Law Enforcement Torch Run's "Bucks for Badges" fundraising event.
To raise awareness of the Torch Run, which will be held in June leading up to the Special Olympics summer games and Special Olympics Northern California, 14 stores will have local law enforcement officers bag groceries with store employees, escort shoppers to their vehicles, and encourage customers to make donations to "Courtesy Cops," on Jan. 29 and Feb. 5.
Select locations will also include radio remotes, and all locations will feature such activities as fingerprinting and balloons for children, police vehicle displays, and Special Olympians greeting shoppers, selling T-shirts, and, in some cases, bagging groceries. Each of these locations has a goal to raise $5,000.
Additionally, consumers can buy special Bucks for Badges paper icons for $1 until Feb. 6 at all participating stores, with proceeds going to Special Olympics Northern California. In addition to their donation, consumers will receive money-saving coupons worth $2.50 on Procter & Gamble purchases.
"Special Olympics is a unique organization that Save Mart is excited to partner with," said Save Mart director of marketing Sally Sanborn. "We look forward to creating a fun event that will bring attention and needed cash to Special Olympics Northern California."
Ken Dami, regional v.p. for Pleasant Hill-based Special Olympics Northern California told Progressive Grocer that besides P&G, Campbell's and PepsiCo were also contributing a certain amount of money from products sold at Save Mart stores to benefit Special Olympics programs in the region. The goal was to raise $90,000 through the course of the campaign, Dami added.
