Save-A-Lot Revs Up for Road Trip

Save-A-Lot, Supervalu Inc.’s hard-discounting subsidiary, is hitting the road this month to raise awareness of its stores as the go-to source for affordable groceries.

The Save-A-Lot Fuel Your Family road trip will feature two brand ambassadors, or “Road Scholars,” making stops in 10 U.S. cities and personal connections with tens of thousands of consumers, through Aug. 28, as the summer road trip season winds down and the new school year gets under way.

“Road trips are a tradition for many families in the United States, and with the high cost of gas a concern for many consumers, we want to show how Save-A-Lot can help ‘fuel your family’ with fresh, quality food and simple meal ideas at savings of up to 40 percent, compared with traditional grocery stores,” said Mark Kotcher, Save-A-Lot director, brand marketing and design. “And, with the start of the school year approaching, we also can help families fuel their kids for success in school with affordable options for breakfast and the school lunch box.”

Save-A-Lot’s Road Scholars are Abby Tinberg and Bob Ringer, who will drive nearly 4,000 miles in August to key Save-A-Lot markets in a 2011 Subaru Forester. Along the way, they plan to attend community events, visit Save-A-Lot stores, conduct random acts of kindness and share tips for easy road trip snacks, as well as affordable breakfast and lunch ideas. Tinberg and Ringer will share stories, photos and videos of their adventure along the way at Facebook.com/savealot and on Twitter at @savealot.

The Road Scholars also will make donations totaling $25,000 on behalf of the company to local Feeding America affiliates in road trip markets, helping these organizations with their hunger-relief efforts in their communities.

The scholars have stops scheduled in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, St. Louis and Chicago.

St. Louis-based Save-A-Lot operates more than 1,200 stores in 39 states from Maine to California.
