Safeway Names General Contractor for $95 Million D-Center

SEATTLE - Safeway Inc. has awarded the Seattle office of Turner Construction with the contract to build a $95 million, 1.2 million-square-foot distribution center in Auburn, Wash. for the Pleasanton, Calif.-based retailer.

Turner Construction will serve as the general contractor for the project, while SLL/Leo A. Daly of Minneapolis will serve as architect. The center is scheduled for completion in March 2005.

Once completed, Safeway's new distribution center will consist of 10 buildings, including a refrigeration warehouse, a grocery warehouse, a recycling center,a truck maintenance garage, and administrative, office, and support buildings.

Dallas-based Turner, a leading general builder in the United States, ranking first or second in the major segments of the building construction field, completed $6.2 billion of construction during 2002.
