PLEASANTON, Calif. - Safeway Inc. today announced the appointment of Brian C. Cornell as the company's new executive vice president, chief marketing officer. Cornell, 45, will oversee the company's marketing, merchandising, manufacturing and distribution. He will report directly to Safeway's chairman, president and c.e.o., Steven A. Burd.
Cornell comes to Safeway from PepsiCo Inc. where he most recently served as president of the Pepsi-Cola North America's (PCNA) Food Services Division and senior v.p. of Sales for PCNA, an expanded role he assumed in March 2003. While at PCNA, he was responsible for the Food Service Division's national and local sales, marketing, strategy, operations and customer service. As s.v.p. sales, he had overall responsibility for the company's 106 North American bottlers as well as retail sales, category management and customer marketing. Under his leadership, the division significantly increased 2003 profits, volume and U.S. market share.
Prior to joining PCNA, Cornell was regional president of PepsiCo Beverages International's European business, with the additional responsibility as s.v.p. Non Carb Beverage Marketing. Cornell joined PepsiCo when it acquired Tropicana from the Seagram Company in 1998.
"Brian's wealth of experience managing the sales and brand marketing function in a variety of global businesses gives Safeway a unique opportunity to take our marketing function to a new level," said Burd. "His proven ability to move the sales and earnings needle in a wide range of retail and food service environments will be an important complement to our ongoing efforts to differentiate and enhance the shopping experience for our customers and build the Safeway brand."
