Roche Bros. Family Pledges $2 Million Toward Field Renovation Project

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Bud and Eileen Roche, of the family that owns Roche Bros. supermarkets here, have reportedly pledged $2 million toward a field renovation project in Needham, Mass., where the couple lives.

The pledge is in line with the Roche family's practice of making charitable donations in the towns where it has stores.

The estimated total price tag for the first phase of the "Fields of Dreams" project, which includes the complete renovation of a local park, the installation of artificial turf at two fields, and 90-foot lights — pending approval from the zoning board — is $3.1 million, according to a local press report. If the Field Study Committee is able raise $1 million, the Roches will contribute the rest.

"[Bud] was looking to do something in Needham that would make a difference," Roche Bros. spokeswoman Janet O'Connor told the Needham Times. "He saw [the field renovation project] in the paper and then spoke with [Selectman] Jim Healy," chairman of the Field Study Committee. O'Connor added that the $2 million was "their own personal donation."
