Report: Shaw's to Cut Hundreds of Jobs
WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Shaw's Supermarkets Inc. plans to eliminate about 307 jobs at some of its stores, according to local reports. The news comes just months after the Shaw's and Star Market chains were acquired by Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons.
A spokesman for the employees' union, United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 791, told local papers it was notified last Friday of 307 job cuts.
The union and company officials are scheduled to begin negotiations later this week concerning their existing contract, which expires July 31.
A Shaw's spokesman, who didn't confirm the number of cuts, was quoted as saying that the cuts target "a small handful of stores in southeastern Massachusetts and in Rhode Island." He said the company made the cuts to allow for more flexible scheduling, and that the workers would be offered other jobs within the Shaw's chain.
The union represents 6,400 workers at 39 Shaw's stores in New England, according to the reports.
