Redner's Markets Turning Off the Lights to Conserve Energy
READING, Pa. -- In an effort to reduce unnecessary electricity, Redner's Markets here has begun to take measures to reduce its stores' usage of electricity, including turning off a specific number of lights in each Redner's Warehouse Market and Quick Shoppe.
Throughout the current period of excessive heat, all of the family chain's warehouse supermarkets and convenience stores will reduce the amount of lighting from 7 a.m. through 8 p.m. Each store will turn off a series of overhead lights during the hottest portions of the day. By turning off every third row of lights in a standard 52,000-square-foot warehouse market, company officials said their stores will be able to save at least 576 kilowatts per day.
Such a reduction of energy consumption will not only cut back on energy costs, but also cool the store's interior and reduce the workload for the store's air conditioning unit.
Redner's said it hopes to reduce the draw of electricity from the power grid, leaving more for the general public's use. It will urge shoppers to ask for assistance if they need it during the reduced electricity hours.
Redner's said its stores will return to a normally lighted environment when temperatures begin to drop.
