Ralphs to Close 11 Supermarkets
COMPTON, Calif. -- Ralphs Grocery Co., based here, has said it will close eleven money-losing supermarkets across California by March, according to published accounts.
Many of the workers affected by the closures will have the chance to move to other local Ralphs stores, the company said. Ralphs currently operates 325 stores, all of them in California. The closures are the result of the grocer's quarterly store evaluations.
"We never close a store unless that store has a lengthy track record of unprofitability," Ralphs spokesman Terry O'Neil told the Sacramento Business Journal. "We will be working to find tenants to come in to replace us."
Of the 11 Ralphs stores scheduled to close, two are in the greater Sacramento area -- North Highlands and Rancho Cordova -- three are in the Bay Area -- Dublin, Novato, and San Francisco -- three are in Bakersfield; and three are in Southern California.
Kroger-owned Ralphs runs traditional supermarkets under the Ralphs banner, as well as warehouse-style stores, FoodsCo in Northern California, and Food 4 Less stores south of Kern County.
