Ralphs and Cops Partner in Holiday Benefit

LOS ANGELES -- Tomorrow, Santa and Ms. Claus will make special pre-Christmas visits to inner-city schools and shelters here via a Presidential-style motorcade bearing holiday cheer, food, and gifts, courtesy of the Kroger-owned Ralphs Grocery Co. and other local and national companies.

The event is part of the 10th annual "A Better Christmas" holiday food and toy distribution, a program sponsored by the United States Secret Service, the California Highway Patrol, and the Los Angeles Police Department that provides food and toys to hundreds of low-income and homeless women and children.

"We are pleased to support this year's 'A Better Christmas' effort, which we hope will bring smiles and hope to hundreds of women and children in need," said Dave Hirz, president of Ralphs.

Ralphs is one of several participating companies assisting the law enforcement groups in this effort; also involved are Mattel Toy Corp., NBC Studios, the Ann and Issy Shabtay Family, Ron Shabtay, Snell's RV of El Monte, and Valle Wholesale Flowers of Los Angeles.

As part of the event, Santa and Mrs. Claus will ride in the same Secret Service limousine the President uses when visiting Los Angeles. CHP motorcycle and patrol units, and LAPD Metropolitan Division patrol cars will escort the Presidential limousine. Included in the motorcade will be a Ralphs delivery truck filled with food and toys to be distributed to the less fortunate. This year's truckload of food and toy donations from Ralphs will include turkeys and all the fixings for complete holiday meals for hundreds of low-income and homeless.

The 20-vehicle holiday motorcade will make gift-giving stops at several locations throughout Los Angeles.

This marks the 10th year that Ralphs has supported the "A Better Christmas" gift-giving motorcade. The company has contributed more than $10 million this year to charities and civic organizations in the communities served by its stores.
