Raley's Recognized By FMI For Training Initiative

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Raley's, based here, has received the Food Marketing Institute's 2004 Maximizing People Potential Award in recognition of the company's comprehensive "Store Director Readiness Program." The award is given annually to a retailer or wholesaler that develops an initiative that enhances employee performance or results in the achievement of a key business goal.

"Raley's is honored that FMI recognized our training initiative for assistant store directors," said the retailer's senior training manager, Doug Shorey, in a statement. "This is an area we identified as a priority, and we put a lot of effort into making the program a top-notch vehicle for meeting our company's leadership needs and for recognizing individuals who we believe will be our next generation of store directors."

"This year's initiatives demonstrated creativity, innovation, and impressive value," added Kimberly Roberts, FMI's senior manager, education programs. "FMI is thrilled to acknowledge Raley's commitment to quality training programs and continued development of its employees, and to share the program with other FMI members."

Award submissions were judged on three categories: impact on workplace learning and performance, return on investment, and minimal use of outside products. Submissions were winnowed down to three finalists and presented to attendees of the recent FMI Human Resources/Training & Development Conference in New Orleans, who voted for the most outstanding program. The winner was then announced at an awards dinner.

Raley's program was designed to identify and train promising assistant store directors to be fully prepared for future promotion to store director positions. The program featured a range of learning opportunities, including a term project; leadership development; workshops on retail operations; on-the-job training; and facility tours.

Award runners-up were Mauldin, S.C.-based Bi-Lo, LLC, whose "Diversity at Bi-Lo" program was designed to create, maintain, and lead the grocer's strategic process for managing diversity, and Supervalu's Shop 'n Save, Pittsburgh Division, whose "Winning in Perishables" initiative aimed to make produce experts out of associates.
