Publix, Wal-Mart Join Launch of New Fresh Food Research Center

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Florida here has joined forces with Publix, Wal-Mart, and other retailers to launch a Center for Food Distribution and Retailing, which specializes in improving efficiencies in the nation's fresh food supply chain.

The center in Gainesville has an advisory board of executives from major chains such as Publix and Wal-Mart, according to a report in the Orlando Sentinel. Private companies have pledged more than $1 million in research support.

The center is staffed by 28 University of Florida faculty members from seven diverse departments representing food production, packaging, transportation, storage, and sale. Graduate students will take on much of the center's research.

The center is already involved in a pilot project on radio frequency tagging with Lakeland, Fla.-based Publix, according to the report.
