Publix Entering Meal-prep Biz
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Publix Super Markets here is reportedly the latest grocer to jump on the meal-assembly bandwagon, preparing to bow its inaugural Make-Ahead Meal outlet in the Jacksonville, Fla. area this autumn, with another pilot store scheduled for the Tampa Bay area.
The meal-prep feature is part of the Apron's program, which offers recipes, easy meals, and cooking schools, Publix spokesman Dwaine Stevens told the Daytona Beach, Fla. News-Journal. Calls to Publix for more information were not returned.
The Make-Ahead Meals feature will allow shoppers to register online for a meal-assembly session. The meals will be put together at the session and packaged for customers to freeze and eat later.
Stevens said that a dozen entrees, each serving four to six people, will cost about $200. The chain will additionally offer plans for smaller households, he added.
There are over 1,500 meal assembly retailers in the United States as of June 9, according to the Easy Meal Prep Association.
