Progressive Grocer Names Meijer 2006 Retailer of the Year

NEW YORK -- Progressive Grocer, a leading voice of the grocery industry for more than 80 years, has named Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer Inc., Retailer of the Year for 2006.

Meijer, which operates 176 supercenters featuring over 40 departments throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio, will be nationally recognized in the magazine's December 2006 issue, with articles that explore the honoree's strengths and unique qualities. The Retailer of the Year profile will feature interviews with Meijer's top executives, as well as other associates.

In explaining the decision to honor the family-held Meijer with the magazine's highest annual award, Progressive Grocer's editor-in-chief, Stephen Dowdell said, "The reasons for our selection are many, and include Meijer's reputation as an exemplary performer in the Midwest, even in the face of ferocious competition; and an innovator in the supercenter format, with aggressive growth plans and demonstrated ability to continue to improve and build upon the concept that the Meijer family pioneered."

Dowdell further cited Meijer's exemplary status as "one of the nation's leading family-run grocery organizations that is well-loved by shoppers for its great selection and low prices." Dowdell also cited the chain's good corporate citizenship, evidenced by its "unswerving support to local education and community organizations. We look forward to saluting the extended Meijer family in our upcoming December issue."

The magazine confers the Retailer of the Year award annually. Other grocers recognized in the past include Bashas (2005), Food Lion (2004), Hy-Vee (2003) Giant Eagle (2002), Stater Bros. and Ukrop's (2001).
