Price-Impact Format Launched by New Albertsons Subsidiary

BOISE, Idaho - There's a new price-impact operator in town, and it's related to Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons. Extreme, Inc., a new company that will be run as a separate and distinct operating division of Albertsons, Inc., announced yesterday that it plans to expand rapidly in the future through a combination of acquisitions and new store development. The stores will run under the Super Saver banner, which is unrelated to an Albertsons banner of the same name.

Initial stores from Extreme, Inc. will include five locations in the Dallas, Texas market and two locations in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana market. The seven locations, which are currently Albertsons stores, will be closed Aug. 26, 2004 and transferred to Extreme, Inc.

These price-focused stores will feature an innovative new store design coupled with unique merchandising formats tailored to the demands of customers in their neighborhoods, according to Mike Clawson, president of the new price-impact company, and a former Albertsons division president.

"The Texas stores, which are currently Albertsons stores, will average around 50,000 square feet," Clawson told Progressive Grocer. "They'll feature a full variety in selection. You may find a few less SKUs than in a typical supermarket, but the selection will be there." Also included will be a service deli--which will be much more self-service than a typical deli, according to Clawson--and a bakery department. "Produce and meat will play an important part in the store," he added.

Clawson said the initial Super Saver stores are expected to open for business in late September, and the price impact chain intends to expand rapidly in the future through a combination of acquisitions and new store development. He said the chain will be conducting job fairs during August to attract employees for the Super Saver stores in the Dallas and Baton Rouge markets.

"These Super Saver stores represent the official launch of a new price impact initiative, which we announced earlier this year," said Larry Johnston, Chairman, c.e.o. and president of Albertsons, in a statement. "This new price impact format coupled with our traditional format will serve the needs of a broader range of food and drug shoppers in many markets across America."

Extreme, Inc. is based in Boise, Idaho, and is a separate and distinct operating division of Albertson's Inc., its parent.
