Price Chopper, Rudy Beverage Team Up to Support High School Sports Program

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Price Chopper here and Rudy Beverage, Inc. (RBI), a portfolio company of Tulsa, Okla.-based Global Beverage Solutions, Inc., have joined forces to support a high school sports program.

The CPG company and Price Chopper's Golub Foundation will come together to raise money to save the athletic program at Mechanicville High School in upstate New York at a community barbecue to be held on the school's football field. RBI co-founder Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger will be a guest speaker at the event, delivering an 45-minute inspirational message of perseverance, a trait he used to achieve success on Notre Dame University's Fighting Irish football team, as shown in the 1993 movie "Rudy," and in his business.

Tickets to the event cost $15 each and are available at all regional Price Chopper locations. The Red Raiders Booster Club will also be selling them at "Family Day" in Tallmadge Park in Mechanicville on Sunday, July 9.

The menu at the barbecue will include hamburgers, hot dogs, potato chips, dessert, and beverages, including Reuttiger's new "better for you" sport beverage, Rudy Revolution. Price Chopper hopes to raise $15,000 at the event, Golub Corp. spokeswoman Mona Golub told the Business Review of Albany, N.Y.

According to Golub, Price Chopper wrote the booster club a $10,000 check as soon as the retailer heard that sports funding was cut from the district's budget. The club wants to raise $88,000 by Aug. 1 to ensure that the school can run a fall athletics program.

In addition, a percentage of proceeds from Rudy Beverage products featured and sold at select Price Chopper Supermarkets throughout the region and all of the proceeds from a related raffle to be announced at the barbecue, which will offer tickets to an upcoming Notre Dame vs. Stanford game as a grand prize, will go to the school's booster club program in support of athletics.

Price Chopper, which last month became the first supermarket chain in the nation to carry Rudy Revolution, is now widening its distribution of the product into additional markets the Northeast regional grocer serves. The rollout will feature product demos with guest appearances by Ruettiger in stores throughout New York.

"Based on the success of the Rudy Revolution rollout in Connecticut and the broad consumer appeal of the product, Price Chopper is excited to be able to offer our customers these healthy beverage lines at additional locations," noted Price Chopper community and public relations representative JoAnn LaPorta.

The family-owned Golub Corp. owns and operates 115 Price Chopper grocery stores in New York, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. Golub's approximately 24,000 associates collectively own 54 percent of the company's privately held stock.
