Price Chopper Promotes Healthy Sleuthing

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Golub Corporation's Price Chopper chain here kicked off an interactive nutritional education program for fourth and fifth graders this week called "Supermarket Sleuth Nutritional Tours."

During the tour, children will learn how to read a food label and determine servings per package and how nutrients relate to that serving. They will also learn about the benefit of eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy foods.

The Price Chopper-commissioned tour curriculum and accompanying workbook designed for follow-up use in the classroom was written by Marcy Fiacco, a registered dietitian and owner of Health Styles Nutrition Consultants, and coordinated by Price Chopper's in-house nutritional specialist Maureen Murphy.

"Our objective is simple. We want children to be armed with the information they need to make healthy food choices so they can enjoy a healthy lifestyle," said Murphy in a statement.

MVP Health Care, a partner in the endeavor, is providing the expertise of dietitians and nurses.

"Childhood obesity is a public health issue that has reached epidemic proportions," noted Dennis L. Allen, MVP e.v.p. and chief medical officer. "Obesity-related health conditions such as heart disease and type II diabetes, which were once found mostly in older adults, are now being diagnosed in much younger people."

Price Chopper officials said the company would continue to roll out other related initiatives in the coming months as part of its "Healthy U" program, which was designed to address a growing demand for practical information about health and nutrition.
