Price Chopper Limited Store Debuts

Price Chopper has introduced Price Chopper Limited, a first-of-its-kind concept store in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., that provides a smaller, full-service grocery store geared to the needs of the surrounding residential community, complementing larger nearby Price Chopper stores.

The new store, located within the Market Center development at the corner of Railroad Place and Church Street, was built in response to residents’ requests for a grocery store within walking distance that offered a complete range of products and services. Price Chopper developed the concept to provide a full-service shopping experience with tailored assortments in a compact 19,000-square-foot footprint.

“At first, many neighbors were concerned that the development of Market Center meant we were going to leave the neighborhood,” explained Jerry Golub, president and CEO of Schenectady-based Golub Corp., which owns and operates 128 Price Chopper stores in New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. “Even though we have a much larger, full-service supermarket just up the road, we were intrigued by the idea of a small-format store in an easily accessible residential setting that would offer staples consistent with Price Chopper’s ‘Best in Fresh’ quality and value. Our long-established history in Saratoga, coupled with the enthusiastic requests made by our neighbors, provided added impetus to this project.”

Featuring a sleek modern look, the Price Chopper Limited offers fresh produce and bakery, and full-service meat, deli and seafood departments, as well as the most popular products within most of the categories offered in the larger Price Chopper formats. The store also has a café where customers can eat in or get such foodservice items as Price Chopper’s signature fresh-made pizza, Roasters Chicken, sandwiches and wraps to go. During the summer, café seating will be outdoors as well as indoors.

“Price Chopper Limited is a brand-new concept for us,” noted Golub. “Essentially, we’ve designed a small supermarket within the context of a residential building and neighborhood that contains a variety of fresh and packaged products and convenience items that people need and want most. When more variety is desired, our full-service Price Chopper Super Center less than two miles away on Route 50 is ready and waiting. We’re confident that this concept will meet the needs of the Saratoga residents who asked for it.”
