Prepared Foods Drives HEB Central Market's Latest Remodel

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- H.E. Butt Grocery Co. is revamping an Austin-area Central Market and placing a more intense emphasis on prepared foods, according to local reports.

The store, originally built in 1999, will remain open during renovations and is slated to debut as new and improved April 1, according to a report in the Austin Business Journal.

Once updated, the 65,000-square-foot store will feature a new seafood case, a new cheese island, and an expanded wine selection. The store's healthy living section will also be revamped.

The unit's in-store café, called Cafe on the Run, will get a new look, too. H.E.B will knock down several walls surrounding the cafe so that shoppers can view the rest of the store from the cafe. The café itself will get a new cooler to hold more foods, plus a gelato bar.

HEB Central Market's competition in the market includes Austin-based Whole Foods Market, Inc., which opened its 80,000-square-foot flagship Austin store in March.
