PMA Leaders to Serve on First USDA Industry Advisory Committee

NEWARK, Del. -- Former Produce Marketing Association (PMA) board chairmen Steve Junqueiro of Save Mart Supermarkets and Tim York of Markon Corp. have been selected to serve on the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Fruit and Vegetable Industry Advisory Committee.

Junqueiro served as PMA chairman from 2004 to 2005, and now is chairman of the executive committee, while York served as chairman from 2001 to 2002; both will serve with 23 other committee members for two years.

Said Junqueiro, "The exchange of information between industry representatives and USDA is clearly in the public interest, considering the industry's importance to the country's economy."

York added, "We are charged with an important task -- to represent the produce industry to Secretary Johanns and ensure that the U.S. government develops programs and services that meet our industry's needs."

The committee advises U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns on issues affecting both the fruit and vegetable industry and consumers, including USDA domestic food security initiatives, imported food safety, national nutrition guidelines, and Food Guide Pyramid implementation.

PMA president Bryan Silbermann said: "We are delighted that Steve Junqueiro and Tim York will serve on this important advisory committee, [where] they will be joined by current PMA retail board member Jim Corby of Food Lion, LLC. PMA applauds Secretary Johanns for selecting these three as well as all the other outstanding industry leaders for the committee."
