Penn Traffic-owned Bakery Plans Layoffs
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Penny Curtiss, the commercial bakery division of the Penn Traffic Co. here, will lay off 26 seasonal call-ins and 28 full-time employees between Aug. 24 and Sept. 8, as it winds up its contract to provide fresh baked goods to Aldi grocery stores.
The regional grocer lost the Aldi contract last month, the Syracuse Post-Standard reported.
Penn Traffic's supermarkets and independent stores are Penny Curtiss' biggest customers for fresh and frozen bakery items.
"We're working closely with the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers, and Grain Millers International Union Local 116 to make the transition as smooth as possible for these employees, who will receive severance and benefits as required by our collective bargaining agreement," said the retailer's v.p. wholesale and manufacturing Dave Adamsen in a statement. "We continue daily to focus our energy pursuing new opportunities to replace this business and we don't anticipate any further layoffs at this time resulting from the contract loss."
Penn Traffic employs over 8,300 associates, with 2,700 based in the immediate Syracuse area.
