Pathmark's Free Lamb Bones Not Kosher
CARTERET, N.J. -- Pathmark Stores here placed an ad in The Star-Ledger newspaper yesterday clarifying that the free lamb shank bones it offers its Jewish customers for Passover are not kosher.
The ad was placed after a few customers complained to the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs in Trenton after discovering that the shank bones were not kosher. Pathmark has been giving the bones away for five years as a community service.
"Although these bones were not labeled 'Kosher' or 'Kosher for Passover' it has come to our attention that some of our customers may have mistakenly assumed that they were," the ad read.
In the Jewish religion, the shank bone is one of several items placed on a Seder plate during the first two nights of Passover. Other symbolic items include parsley to represent spring, bitter herbs, like horseradish, for the bitterness of slavery, and salt water for the slaves' tears.
Next Passover, Pathmark clearly intends to label the bones as non-Kosher to avoid further confusion.
