New Shop 'n Save to Go Head to Head With Giant Eagle, Whole Foods
PITTSBURGH - A new Shop 'n Save is expected to open at the East Liberty Station shopping center here February 2005 and plans to leverage its Icon Brand Partner Program to go head to head with nearby Giant Eagle and Whole Foods Markets.
"Despite the two reatailers already in the area, we believe that the neighborhood is very much underserved," Shop 'n Save president Lee Armbuster told Progressive Grocer. "We are going into the area with a variety of products and strategies in order to differentiate ourselves from our local competitors."
One of these strategies, the Icon Brand Partner Program, which began November 2003, features well-known Pittsburgh brands merchandised within the store, using the brands' color schemes and motifs. "What we've done is take those elements that capture the personality of these famous Pittsburgh brands, and re-create those elements within the branded departments of our stores," said Armbuster.
