Minyards' Carnival Banner Co-sponsoring Big Cinco de Mayo Event

COPPELL, Texas -- The Carnival division of regional retailer Minyard Food Stores here is gearing up to co-sponsor a Cinco de Mayo celebration in Dallas that's expected to bring in more than 125,000 people. The free daylong event will be held April 30 at Texas Stadium.

This is the second year that Carnival has teamed up with Univision Radio for the special celebration, which marks the events of May 5, the day when the people of Mexico remember the Battle of Puebla. Univision Radio has held the event for more than 10 years.

"Carnival is creating an event within an event," said Janet Alonso, director of Latin American public and consumer relations at Minyard Food Stores, Inc., in comments e-mailed to Progressive Grocer. "There's a special area at the event called 'La Plaza de Carnival.' This plaza will be a venue for Carnival and its vendors to interact with consumers, with 39 of our vendor partners sampling their traditional products and also introducing new products." Carnival will also set up a special area where kids can play, have their faces painted, and participate in other activities.

The "plaza" concept has special meaning to Latino consumers, as "la plaza" is known in Latin American countries as a farmers' market or town center, noted Alonso.

Also at the event, the retailer will have representatives from its bakery, deli, and produce departments to talk to potential employment candidates. Representatives from pharmacy will be on hand to provide information about children's health.

For its part, Univision will organize two concert stages, where several artists will perform throughout the day.
