Metropolitan Market Opens Fifth Store

SEATTLE - Metropolitan Market will open the doors of its fifth and largest store to date in Federal Way's Dash Point Village Shopping Center here Aug. 18.

"Dash Point and its surrounding communities are a perfect match for our high quality and service supermarket format," said Terry Halverson, president and c.e.o. of Metropolitan Market. "Although the area is already served by other types of food store formats, Metropolitan Market provides a unique product selection that includes more local, imported, and natural food products."

Metropolitan Market planners carefully researched the needs of the community and factored them into the store's offerings: a full-service delicatessen, a bakery with artisan breads and fresh baked pastries, a well-stocked seafood section, farm-fresh and organic produce, a meat counter featuring both all-natural and aged meats, a large wine selection with on-site expertise, full service floral, and housewares departments. Experts in each category staff the floor to ensure service satisfaction.

Metropolitan Market broke ground on the site in October 2002 and conducted a complete site overhaul, transforming what was once both an 18,000-square-foot Johnny's and QFC into a 37,000-square-foot upscale supermarket.

Approximately 25 employees were promoted or transferred within the company. Another 115 full- and part-time new hires round out the 140-person team. Store manager Darryl Pittman and assistant store director Jeff Baskett are area residents and understand the needs of the communities that Dash Point will serve.

The 16-tenant Dash Point Village Shopping Center is enjoying a revival. Easy traffic access, a face-lifted facade, and aggressive leasing efforts have contributed to its development. A Starbucks, Subway, and Ace Hardware are the market's neighbors.

Halverson, who hand-picked the store's warm sienna, amber, and golden olive tones, likens the store feel and look to the Proctor (Tacoma) Metropolitan Market location, but it differs in its spacious storefront exterior; an expansive, showcased delicatessen; and its best-yet kiosk chef demonstration area, professionally equipped in Thermador appliances. Spotlights, chalk-illustrated signage, and boutique merchandising and display enhance the store's sophistication. Jaso Ludviksen, Inc., of Seattle and Mulvanny G2 of Bellevue, Wash. led the store's architecture and design; J.R. Abbott Construction built the store.

Dash Point follows the November 2003 Sand Point store opening. In addition to its two newest stores, Metropolitan Market operates Queen Anne, Admiral, and Proctor locations.
