Meijer's Fifth New Southeast Michigan Supercenter Bows First Ethanol Fuel Station

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Meijer, Inc. here will cut the ribbon on the last of five stores it has opened in 2006, at 12 Mile and Mound Rds. in Warren, Mich. this morning. All of its new stores are located in its market area of southeast Michigan.

"As we've grown, southeast Michigan has always been an important market, and we are excited to offer customers in Macomb County our great one-stop-shopping format," said Hank Meijer, co-chairman and co-c.e.o. "This new store is particularly exciting because it also provides the first Meijer ethanol fuel pump in Michigan."

Store director Jack Woods said, "We have nearly 600 great people to provide friendly service to our customers. When we originated the supercenter format, we were responding to the needs of our customers. Today we provide the format of choice for shoppers. Being adaptive to meet the demands of our customers allows us to maintain a competitive edge."

Meijer -- which plans to open six or seven more stores in 2007 -- said that its short- and long-term growth plans "are aggressive and are designed to provide customers in existing and new markets a one-stop-shopping opportunity with the lowest prices possible and high-quality products and service."

Although the new stores each measure 207,000 square feet, the company said that they're designed to move product quickly from the shipping area to the shelves, allowing for a more effective and efficient flow and assisting in controlling costs.

The store layout is designed to provide easy shopping, with a solutions focus on enhancing the shopping experience with new adjacencies, such as kitchen supplies and small appliances located near the grocery aisle; a baby section complete with food, diapers, strollers, and clothing; pharmacy moved to the front of the store with health and beauty care; jewelry, greeting cards, and floral moved to the front of the store to provide the convenience of one-stop-gift buying; grocery aisles widened and shelving units lowered to provide more light and create a welcoming atmosphere; pets supplies across the aisle from grocery; and point-of-purchase displays in the fashions area, to create a department store atmosphere.

"Our new store will certainly make a strong impact in a community with one stop shopping but will also bring quality jobs to Macomb County," said Meijer spokeswoman Stacie Behler.

Meijer operates 176 stores throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio.
