Meijer Set to Open in MI’s Upper Peninsula

Midwestern superstore retailer Meijer is poised to open its first stores in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula next month.

Employees have begun training at the new stores, in Escanaba and Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., which have started receiving merchandise in anticipation of their grand opening, scheduled for May 18. The gas stations at each store opened April 20.

The company has released a video showing its first delivery trucks to cross the Mackinac Bridge on their way to the new superstores.

Meijer executives and local dignitaries will dedicate each store’s first day of business with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The retailer will also feature special promotions and events to commemorate each store’s grand opening celebration beginning on May 21.

The Escanaba and Sault Ste. Marie supercenters are two of seven new stores Meijer is opening in Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin this year.

Meijer heralded its Upper Peninsula launch as part of $375 million in new stores and upgrades announced in March.

Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer operates 230 supercenters and grocery stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
