Martin's to Take Part in 'Radiothon' for Tsunami Aid

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Another regional operator, Martin's Super Markets here, will raise funds in a radiothon and roll out barrels to be filled with goods needed in stricken areas.

The retailer has been collecting donations for tsunami victims this week in conjunction with the American Red Cross, which placed canisters at the checkout lanes in every one of Martin's 19 locations in Indiana and Michigan.

Martin's also plans over the next few days to set up food barrels to collect bottled water and prepackaged snack foods such as granola bars for Elkhart, Ind.-based Feed the Children, to be sent to the devastated areas.

Additionally, on Friday, Martin's will take part in a drive-through donation radiothon from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., held by five South Bend Federated Media radio stations, during which ribbons will be affixed to the car antennas of contributors to "raise awareness," according to Martin's head of advertising, Dave Mayfield. Marketing assistant Amy McClellan, who noted that she had just received two $500 checks from customers, said the fundraising effort would go on "as long as the public wants to give."
