Major Hannaford Remodel Features New Bottle-return Concept

SCARBOROUGH, Maine -- Hannaford Bros. Co.' extensive ongoing remodel of its hometown store here, during which the location is maintaining its normal business hours, includes a brand-new bottle-return pilot program from CLYNK, a subsidiary of Scarborough-based Count & Crush.

The bottle-return area was replaced last week by a new facility, the CLYNK "Drop & Go" redemption center, adjacent to the store. The center operates between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. daily.

According to Hannaford spokeswoman Caren Epstein, "By filling out a simple sign-up form, customers will receive a 'Drop & Go' card. They simply swipe the card and drop off their cans and bottles without having to sort them. By the following day, the value of the bottles and cans will be loaded into a secure account.

"There are kiosks located in the store and in the CLYNK facility where customers can check their account balances and access a range of payment options," added Epstein.

To facilitate construction, Hannaford will move its recycling bins from their current location later this spring. The bins will be temporarily located elsewhere in the parking lot before being moved permanently after construction is complete.

Opened over 13 years ago, the Scarborough store was last overhauled in 1998. Although improvements have been made since, this is the first big overall renovation, according to Hannaford.

Every department in the store will be updated to accommodate more products. The deli will feature a new panini grill and sushi bar. A larger produce area will offer customers a bigger product selection and seasonal variety. The expanded, full-service butcher shop will provide an increased selection of ready-to-cook and -eat seasoned meats and poultry. Other changes to the store will affect decor, signage, cases, shelving, and lighting.

Among the exterior changes will be a small expansion of about 1,130 square feet to the front of the building for a new building entrance, similar to many other Hannaford locations in the area. Also, for greater customer convenience, a separate pharmacy entrance will be added.

"There will be a lot of activity over the next six to eight months," noted store manager Jason Hilton. "We will work to remain as convenient to customers as possible while work goes on to improve customer service, variety, and the shopping experience."

Delhaize-owned Hannaford operates 151 supermarkets and food-and-drug combination stores in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts under the Hannaford Supermarket and Hannaford Supermarket and Pharmacy banners. Hannaford employs over 24,000 associates.
