Kroger Names Mike Ellis Prez of Fred Meyer

CINCINNATI -- The Kroger Co. yesterday appointed company veteran Michael Ellis to the presidency of its Fred Meyer division.

"Mike built his career with Fred Meyer and we are excited to have him lead the division," said Don McGeorge, president and c.o.o. of Kroger. "His extensive experience in food and general merchandise will be a tremendous asset in his new role. We know Mike looks forward to joining Fred Meyer associates again as the division continues to enhance our customers' shopping experience."

Ellis replaces Darrell Webb, who earlier this month said he was leaving the Kroger Co. division to become c.e.o., chairman and president of fabric and craft retailer Jo-Ann Stores Inc.

Ellis has held several leadership positions within Kroger, including his most recent role as group v.p. for grocery, drug, general merchandise, pharmacy, and advertising. He started his career with Fred Meyer as a parcel clerk in 1975. Prior to his most recent role at Kroger's headquarters, he had served as s.v.p. of Fred Meyer's food group for five years.

Kroger's Fred Meyer division, based in Portland, Ore., is a chain of 128 multi-department stores serving four Western states. In addition to full grocery and pharmacy departments, the stores carry a selection of general merchandise including apparel, home furnishings, electronics, toys, and fuel.

Kroger operates (either directly or through its subsidiaries) 2,483 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 31 states under two dozen local banners including Kroger and Kroger Marketplace, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Food 4 Less, King Soopers, Smith's and Smith's Marketplace, Fry's and Fry's Marketplace, Dillons, QFC, and City Market. The company also operates 783 convenience stores, 423 jewelry stores, 593 supermarket fuel centers, and 42 food processing plants.
