Kroger Highlights Local Products in New Columbus Store

CINCINNATI -- Local products are playing a key role in helping the Kroger Co., based here, court customers in its newly opened 65,000-square-foot store in the Brewery District near downtown Columbus, Ohio, according to local reports.

Kroger's new "Brewer's Yard" store, which opened its doors yesterday, will emphasize a variety of locally made products. As the chain's only store to sell meats from the local Herman Falter Packing Co. and fresh-baked items from Omega Bakery -- both of which produce their products in downtown Columbus -- the move is part of Kroger's intent to promote downtown development in the area, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

Aiming to create a unique store, spokeswoman Monica Gordon was quoted as saying: "If our customers know that we are supporting them to keep their businesses alive and thriving, and are giving back to the community, then they'll likely support us in turn."

In addition to an enhanced presentation of to-go items such as coffee, pizza, salad, and sushi, the new Kroger will house a Grange Bank branch and a Donatos Pizza Take-and-Bake station.

Brewer's Yard is a growing part of Columbus that has increased in population by more than 60,000 in the last 10 years.

At the end of the second quarter of fiscal 2005, Kroger operated 2,515 supermarkets and multidepartment stores in 32 states under two dozen local banners, including Kroger, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Food 4 Less, King Soopers, Smith's and Smith's Marketplace, Fry's and Fry's Marketplace, Dillons, QFC, and City Market.
