Krispy Kreme Calling on London

LONDON -- Krispy Kreme Doughnuts will open its first European store in Harrods department store here, the Winston-Salem, N.C.-based company said this week.

The shop, which opens in October, will be on the ground floor of the famous department store and have a separate entrance to capitalize on morning rush-hour street traffic. The Harrods store will be the first of 25 stores that Krispy Kreme plans to open in Britain and Ireland over the next five years.

Don Henshall, head of the group's U.K. operation, which is 34 percent owned by Krispy Kreme, said in news reports that all products will be made in the store. According to Henshall, Krispy Kreme hopes to cash in on the explosive growth of coffee bars in the United Kingdom. "In Britain, the doughnut market is a market without a brand," he said.
