Knowlan's Upgrades its Electronic Shelf Labels

VADNAIS HEIGHTS, Minnesota -- Community-based independent grocer Knowlan's Super Markets, Inc., which operates Festival Foods and Knowlan's stores in Minnesota, is currently upgrading its electronic shelf label system to one with additional functionality to enhance the pricing management and accuracy in its stores.

"Our first install was a new store that opened on June 1 st of this year," Ed Doud, Knowlan's director of retail technology, told Progressive Grocer. "Customer response to has been very positive. The two subsequent stores were upgrades from a previous system."

The ESLs -- called Pricer -- from Plano, Texas-based StoreNext Retail Technologies, provide electronic links directly from the POS file data to shelf-edge pricing and information modules ensuring instant accuracy and consistency when verifying or establishing prices throughout the store. They feature an LCD that can be programmed to flash to draw attention to special promotions. "We believe the LCD layout, especially on promotional items, is a step forward in ESL technology," said Doud. "When an item is on a price reduction, a red blinking 'SALE' appears vertically on the left side of the tag."

In addition to the new store install, Knowlan's upgraded ESLs at two other stores, and plans to install the ESL system in a new store opening this fall. RDS, StoreNext's Minnesota and North Dakota dealer, is working in tandem with Knowlan's on the technology rollout.

Knowlan's Super Markets, Inc. owns and operates six Festival Foods stores and two Knowlan's stores.
