King Kullen Implementing Energy-Efficiency Program
BETHPAGE, N.Y. -- King Kullen Co. here has implemented the Retrofit Energy and Capacity program developed by the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) with the aim of helping the chain lower its energy consumption by 75 megawatts yearly through having consultants check and install energy-efficient systems.
King Kullen v.p. Thomas Cullen told Newsday that the program's consultants aided in sourcing new store lighting that will help pay for the improvements within a year's time. He added that the new lighting looks more natural than the current fluorescent lights.
According to LIPA, the expected 12 million kilowatt-hour savings for the supermarket chain alone is enough to power about 1,200 average homes, and will save King Kullen over $1 million a year.
All 45 of the retailer's are scheduled to be retrofitted by January 2007. King Kullen will then begin looking at and enhancing the energy efficiency of such items as its refrigeration systems.
