Kansas City's Price Chopper Opens 50th Store Today

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Ball's Foods Price Chopper here is opening its 50th store today in Olathe, Kan., a suburb of Kansas City. The third Price Chopper location in Olathe, the new store measures more than 60,000 square feet store, and employs about 200 associates.

The new unit includes such features as a Starbuck's coffee shop, a Rice Garden Chinese Restaurant, a drive-through pharmacy, curbside grocery pickup, and four self-serve checkstands. It also has an on-premise bakery, deli, and a fresh meat and seafood department staffed by butchers. Additionally, the location carries Price Chopper's signature "Triple Inspected" produce, KC Pride Beef, and its line of Tippin's Bakery Products.

"The Olathe store is designed specifically to meet the needs of a growing and highly discerning community," said David Ball, president of Ball's Foods, owner of the new store and 15 other Price Choppers, in a statement. "From variety and convenience, to service and value, the new store sets the standard for grocery retailing."

At the grand opening today, Kansas City Chiefs' Mascot KC Wolf will help cut the ribbon. Also, the store will host radio station remote broadcasts and other activities, and on the opening two days from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m., customers can go for a spin in the ARCA "Pork Ford Racing Car" simulator, courtesy of America's Pork Producers.

During the store's first week, it will feature Price Chopper's Best Choice brands on special, in addition to product samplings, demonstrations, and the "Best Choice Challenge," which encourages customers to compare Best Choice items with national brands. Today and tomorrow, 30 randomly chosen customers shopping between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. will receive a grocery bag full of Best Choice products.

Five Kansas City families and locally based Associated Wholesale Grocers own the Price Chopper brand. Family-owned stores make up 44 of the branded groceries, while the AWG cooperative, the second-largest in the United States, owns the six stores in Topeka and St. Joseph. Since opening its first store in 1979, Price Chopper has expanded throughout the Kansas City metro area and added stores in Topeka, Kan. and St. Joseph, Mo. The chain employs nearly 10,000 in its markets.
